Lung diseases, particularly bronchitis and asthma, are some of the most common medical conditions. Fortunately, patients are provided with an effective means to address their conditions through the use of the drug known as Advair Diskus.
Advair Diskus is a brand name of the drug which is used in the treatment of chronic bronchitis and asthma. Its generic name is fluticasone and salmeterol, the former of which is a steroid, while the latter is a bronchodilator. Fluticasone works to prevent inflammation-causing substances from being released in the body. Salmeterol, on the other hand, serves to relax the muscles found in the airways so improved breathing may be achieved.
Advair Diskus is prescribed to patients so that they may be able to prevent the onset of asthma attacks. However, it should be noted that the medication is not mean to address asthma attacks which have already started. This drug is not formulated to reverse the symptoms. Another inhalation medication, which is fast-enough, should be used to treat an asthma attack that is taking place.
Advair Diskus directions should be followed as they are prescribed. The drug should not be taken in amounts larger than what was recommended. Also, the length of treatment should only be up to the time prescribed by the doctor. Normally, asthma is treated using a combination of various drugs. To achieve best results, medications should be used as directed, and doses or schedule of medication should not be altered unless advised by the doctor.
Advair Diskus comes with its own inhaler device, which is preloaded with 60 doses, in the form of blister packs. Each time the inhaler is used, the device opens, simultaneously loading a blister. The Advair Diskus should not be reused, and should be discarded after 1 month of being out of its foil pouch, or when all doses have been used up, whichever of these come first.
When taken regularly, Advair Diskus brings the best results. Thus, it is wise to have the prescription refilled in case the medication runs out. Doctors should be informed if the medicine does not seem to be working well as expected, or of the patient’s condition has gotten worse.
Patients who missed a dose may take it right after they remember it. The missed dose may be skipped if its right about time to take the next dose. Extra dosage should not be taken along with the regular scheduled dose in order to compensate for the missed dose.
In case of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought. Overdose symptoms of the medication include: chest pain, seizures, headache, vomiting, tremor, irregular heart beats, weakness, and nausea.
Using another salmeterol while taking Advair Diskus should be avoided unless following the doctor’s advice. Advair Diskus is known to reduce blood cells which are tasked to help fight infections in the body. Thus, stay away from people who have infections or are sick. Some medical conditions can be harmful to patients who are on steroids.
Advair Diskus side effects may be mild or serious. The less complicated ones are: nausea; headache; diarrhea; hoarseness, dryness of mouth, throat, or nose; sinus pain, and stuffy nose.
Side effects which are considered to be more serious and require prompt medical attention include: bronchospasm, worse asthma symptoms, sores inside the mouth, chest pains, tremor, and uneven or irregular heart beats.
The doctor should also be informed about other medications which the patient might be taking in as these can react with Advair Diskus and its results. The use of vitamins, supplements, and herbal products should be made known to the doctor as well. And like most drugs available, Advair Diskus emphasizes prevention more than cure.
