Altace

Ramipril is the generic name of the drug Altace. Ramipril fall under the drug class known as angiotensin converting enzyme or ACE inhibitors. This type of drug is used as treatment for heart failure and high blood pressure, and as preventive medication for kidney failure brought about by diabetes and high blood pressure.

ACE is crucial in the production of the protein called angiotensin II. This particular protein contracts muscle found in various arteries of the body, particularly the heart, causing the arteries to narrow and the blood pressure to elevate. The contraction done by angiotensin II in the kidney likewise elevates the blood pressure and reduces blood flow. Thus, ACE inhibitors like Altace lower down blood pressure through the decrease of angiotensin II production. Hence, arterial muscles are relaxed and arteries are enlarged. The widening of the arteries everywhere in the body allows easier pumping of the heart. The benefits which come with Altace and other ACE inhibitors are especially helpful to patients who have congestive heart failure.

Altace is mainly prescribed as treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure, and congestive heart failure. The medication is also used to prevent the onset of strokes, heart attacks, and deaths caused by heart problems. Altace likewise slows down the development of kidney disease in diabetic patients.

Altace is available in 1.25 mg, 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg capsules. However, 2.5 mg to 20 mg a day of Altace is usually prescribed to patients either as one dose or two doses. Altace is not to be taken by pregnant women. Patients using this medication are also advised against the use of potassium supplements without consulting their respective health care practitioners.

Those who are taking the drug to address high blood pressure should do it on a regular basis to obtain the drug’s optimum benefits. The gradual decline of blood pressure means it will take a couple of weeks before a patient can achieve the maximum efficiency of Altace. Medication should also be continued even if the patient is feeling well. Although Altace does not work to cure hypertension, it serves to keep the blood pressure under control.

The drug should be taken exactly as prescribed. For those who have a hard time swallowing capsules, they can choose to mix the contents with around four ounces of applesauce, apple juice, or water. The entire mixture should be consumed at one time in order to obtain the efficiency of a full dose. Mixture can be prepared and kept up to 24 hours prior dosing schedule at room temperature, and up to 48 hours when stored inside the refrigerator.

A missed dose should be taken right when you remember it. But if it’s about time for the next one, you can skip it and continue with your usual dosing schedule. Double doses should never be taken at one time.

Altace side effects are not predictable. However, if they do develop or intensify, the doctor should be informed right away. Your doctor will be able to assess your condition and determine if the use of Altace is a safe method of treatment. The most common side effects include: dizziness, cough, low blood pressure, and chest pains. Those who are taking Altace right after experiencing a heart attack may feel light-headed, particularly when standing. Also, a heart failure that is more severe is a likely possibility.

There are also other side effects associated with the use of Altace. It is important for patients to know what to expect when taking the drug. Thus, if there is significant discomfort and unusual symptoms observed, make sure that your doctor knows about them.
