Ambien

Ambien, a brand name of the drug known as zolpiderm, belongs to the drug class referred to as hypnotics or sedatives. Zolpiderm highly associated with another group of sedatives known as benzodiazepines. Such medications are used for sedation, anti-seizure or anti-convulsant, muscle relaxation, and to lessen anxiety. Zolpiderm drugs, Ambien included, are formulated with less of the anti-seizure and muscle relaxant effects, and more of sedation benefits. Hence, these are typically prescribed as sleep medication.

Ambien is available in 5 mg and 10 mg tablets, and are taken to address insomnia or sleeplessness problems. This medication has been proven to make patients sleep faster and longer. It should be ingested without food just before bedtime to stimulate sleep. The liver removes Ambien that is why doses should be reduced in patients who have liver problems such as hepatitis. Lower doses are also used among older people since their livers have decreased ability of removing the drug from their bodies.

Since Ambien works to make patients fall asleep, the medication should not be taken during the patients’ normal waking time, unless they have about 7-8 hours for sleeping. Some people have been known to forget about the activities they engaged in while using the drug. During such cases, the use of Ambien should be stopped and another treatment for sleep disorder may be prescribed.

Before using this medication, patients should advise their doctors about any food or drug allergies they may have. Certain health issues like lung disease, liver disease, previous addiction to alcohol or drugs, kidney disease, and history of mental illness, suicidal tendencies, or depression. Such conditions may consider Ambien as an inappropriate medication for you, or your dosage may slightly adjusted, or there may be special tests done during treatment.

Ambien is not safe for use among pregnant women as it can cause harm to the unborn baby. It can also be passed through breast milk, and can affect health of the breastfed baby. Thus, doctors should be informed if the patient is pregnant, planning on becoming one, or nursing.

The proper use of Ambien is taking it exactly as it is prescribed. The drug should not be taken in longer or in amounts larger than what is recommended. The patient instructions which come with the medication can serve as a guide for efficient and safe use.

Since this medication is not intended for long-term use, doctors should be consulted if insomnia symptoms persist or worsen. The drug is not to be taken beyond 5 weeks unless advised by the doctor.

Sedation drugs or sleeping pills are some of the most abused form of drugs. If you feel that you have taken in more than what the prescription instructed, immediate medical attention should be sought. Ambien overdose is fatal, particularly when other drugs are taken in as well. Symptoms of overdose include confusion, light headedness, sleepiness, shallow breathing, fainting, or even coma.

Ambien side effects, such as hallucinations, worse sleep issues, aggression, depressed mood, and reduced inhibitions, may be experienced by some patients. However, not all side effects are grave. The minor and more common ones are: weakness, blurred vision, daytime drowsiness, headache, forgetfulness, diarrhea, vomiting, and abnormal or vivid dreams. There are other side effects aside from those mentioned which may occur. Patients who experience unusual symptoms while on Ambien should consult these to their doctors.

Since there are specific types of drugs which are known to affect the efficiency of Ambien, it is best that the doctor is made aware of the various medications, supplements, herbal products, and vitamins taken in by the patient. Otherwise, the drug won’t help alleviate the patient’s condition at all.
