You probably have heard or read something about the prescription NSAIDs. Well, if you are not new to it, you probably have heard about Celebrex. If so, then great! But I guess, you want to know more about it, right? For those who are interested in knowing everything about Celebrex, particularly its dosage and side effects, just continue reading.
What Is Celebrex?
Also known medically by name Celecoxib, Celebrex is a member of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) group designed to treat a wide variety of medical condition including arthritis, menstrual cramps or pain, ankylosing spondylitis, and colonic polyps. It is labeled by experts as the COX-2 inhibitor of NSAID that works to block or hinder the flow of certain chemicals or substances in the body that can cause inflammation. To clearly put, this medication once taken on its right dosage will attack prostaglandins capable of forming inflammation in the body. It attacks the prostaglandins to eliminate the inflammation by blocking the enzymes that produces the prostaglandin chemicals. It is important to note though that although Celebrex acts to treat symptoms of inflammation, it does not guarantee to totally cure the disease that allows the symptoms to appear and grow.
There are several researches and studies that note Celebrex to be somewhat different from the other regular NSAIDs. The difference mainly lies on how this medication functions to eliminate the symptoms of the inflammation. According to several claims, Celebrex only produces less inflammation to the stomach and other areas in the body. It does not even create any interference with blood clotting. In case of people suffering for familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), Celebrex is found to be capable of reducing the formation and size of the polyps. It is for this claim basically that this prescription medication is approved as a secondary form of treatment among FAP patients.
Celebrex Dosage
Typically, doctors prescribe Celebrex to be taken in the smallest effective doses possible. Every patient is required to take this, regardless of the condition suffered. However, for people who are experiencing symptoms of osteoarthritis, the dose will only range from 100 milligrams to 200 milligrams on a given day. If 100 milligrams is taken first, it must be followed by another 100 milligrams so to make it 200. For those with rheumatoid arthritis, this medication is typically given 100 or 200 milligrams twice a day. The dose is increased to 400 if the condition suffered from is menstrual pains or cramps. This 400 milligrams dose is given on the first day and is followed by another 200 on the second day, especially if needed. And, for patients suffering from FAP, you may be required to take 400 milligrams of Celebrex twice a day.
Celebrex Side Effects
Just like other medicines, Celebrex may cause certain side effects to every patient. The most common of the side effects of Celebrex are intestinal and stomach ulcers. These risks, however, occur short term than the other NSAIDs. Aside from that, this NSAID medication does not work to interfere with how the blood platelets work in the body. With that, it’s no surprise for it to be incapable of reducing the blood clotting. This will in turn lead to intensified bleeding, as with the other NSAIDs.
If you are thinking of Celebrex adverse side effects, you may encounter abdominal pain, headaches, diarrhea, nausea, dyspepsia, insomnia, as well as flatulence. Other side effects may include heart failure, kidney failure, chest pain, fainting, intestinal and stomach ulcers, blurred vision, bleeding, increased hypertension, deafness, ringing of ear, weight gain, photosensitivity, anxiety, flu-like symptoms, weakness, drowsiness, and water retention.
There are also several other studies which link symptoms of allergic reactions, such as itching, rashes, and breathing difficulty to the use of Celebrex.
Well, if any of those above mentioned side effects are experienced, make sure to talk to your doctor as immediate as possible. When left ignored, such symptoms may cause further complications, so be wary and careful.
