Hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the many medical conditions affecting millions of people from different areas in the world. Statistics show that more than 50% of the total population in the world is suffering from it, thus it’s no wonder for these people to appeal to medical interventions just to free them from any of the bothering symptoms of hypertension.
Luckily, a number of treatments or solutions were made known to the public to at least help these people recover from high blood pressure. One of the most effective and the most preferred is Cozaar.
Cozaar is basically an oral prescription medication designed and formulated to contain the most potent characteristics of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). It is then a relative of candesartan, irbesartan, and valsartan, three other powerful angotensin blockers, but unlike these options, Cozaar was the first receptor antagonist to be distributed and marketed worldwide.
Now, how Cozaar works to treat symptoms of high blood pressure? Simple! When taken on the right dose, this prescription medication blocks the angiotensin receptor, which develops in the body through the power of the so-called “angiotensin-converting enzyme”. When the receptors are blocked, it then allows the blood vessels in the body to open, expand or widen, leading to the reduction of blood pressure. Because of this mechanism, the Food and Drug Administration approved Cozaar just in 1995.
There is an easy to follow directions involved in taking Cozaar. On the most basic, patients suffering from hypertension are required to start the medication with a dose of about 50 milligrams per day. This, however, is prescribed for adults. This dose can be increased to 100 if needed, and if taken this way, the 100 milligrams of this treatment will be divided into two, so it can be taken twice a day. Perhaps the good thing about this medication is that it works effectively to treat the condition even if taken with a full or empty tummy.
Although that safe and easy to take, Cozaar is still capable of causing a myriad of side effects that patients need to endure while on the treatment. The most common of these Cozaar medical side effects are stomachache or abdominal pains, diarrhea, nausea, leg and back pain, headache, dizziness, weakness, muscle spasm, insomnia, sore throat, runny nose, and dry cough. If any of these conditions persist earlier in the treatment, patients are advised to continue using the medication but under a medical supervision.
Aside from those common symptoms, there are also a number of serious Cozaar side effects that patients need to note of. Included in the list are lighheadedness, fainting, swelling, irregular heartbeat, fast weight gain, irregular urination, yellowing of the skin and eyes, dry mouth, confusion, vomiting, drowsiness, nausea, increased thirst, weakness, muscle pains, and seizures. Allergic reactions like hives, difficulty of breathing, and closing of the throat may also develop as three other serious conditions that need to be solved. The best way to prevent these conditions from complicating is to talk to your doctor everything about your experiences. Call for immediate medical attention or help if any of these side effects of Cozaar persist.
Warning: Pregnant women must not take Cozaar. If you are conceiving, tell your doctor. This is a rule of thumb since this medication may cause certain injuries to your unborn child. It may even cause death. And, much to your surprise, pregnant women who are considering this treatment may develop thinking reactions that are unusual. To avoid all of these complications, make sure to tell your doctor and take extra precaution especially when driving or doing anything heavy that requires you to be alert and awake.
