If you stumble upon a drug called Depakote, don’t be confused. Depakote can be a stand-alone drug used for treating specific convulsions or seizures or can be teamed with other medicines for epilepsy.
Depakote is of two forms – capsule and the delayed release tablet. This drug is also taken to direct the agitated occurrences or instances of unusual energy and exuberance. These conditions take place in what is called manic depression.
But one has to take note that Depakote drug can have adverse effects on the liver that can sometimes be lethal, that is why careful and proper treatment should be made during the first six months of medication. Young patients, usually below two years old, are susceptible to liver damage. The presence of mental disorder and interaction of other anticonvulsant drugs can even worsen the damaging effects of Depakote. The threat of liver injury however can be lessened as age increases, although, thorough observation should still be made to avoid unattended damage of the liver. If the patient experiences any of these signs – yellowing of the eyes and skin, decreased appetite, vomiting, swelling of the face, weakness, sleepiness and inability to control seizure, make sure to bring the patient to the doctor the soonest time.
Aside from the liver, Depakote may also cause harm to the pancreas. Unfortunately, its ill effects on the pancreas are unpredictable and will sometimes occur later. Pancreatic damage caused by taking Depakote can be noticed if the patient feels pain in the abdominal area, vomits frequently, feels nausea or losses his appetite. Seek medical attention right away if any of those symptoms are seen.
In taking Depakote, one must know the appropriate ways. Depakote tablets are not chewable so it must be taken entirely without crushing it. Drink full glass of water to help dissolve the medicine. Sprinkle capsules are also available for Depakote. It must also be taken properly by swallowing it entirely. You may also choose to mix in the sprinkle capsule contents on a mash or pudding. You can also dissolve it on a glass of water and drink to empty it. Depakote do not cause troubling effect in your stomach, but if you find so, you take the drug along with your regular meal just as long as you take the right dosage. You should also observe proper gap between taking doses. Should you skip a dose, you can still catch up just as long as it’s not an hour late.
Side effects are very common in medicines. But in the case of Depakote, it’s hard to tell if a side effect is caused by such since this drug is often taken along with other anticonvulsant medicines. Your doctor should tell you if your body does not react positively to his prescription. If you experience any of Depakote side effects, you must seek medical attention immediately. Among the side effects is weight gain or weight loss, weakness, vomiting, eyesight difficulty, tremor, drowsiness, buzzing in the ears, soar throat, nausea, inflammation in the nose, appetite loss, memory gap, anxiety, digestion problems, affected body coordination, insomnia, severe headache, hair loss, flu, fever, mood swings, lightheadedness, diarrhea, emotional distress, unusual thoughts, pain in the abdominal area, slow breathing and bronchitis. There have been reports linking sexual side effects with Depakote although doctors find no relevant correlation between the two.
For people who have problems with their liver or had previous liver surgery are not prescribed to take Depakote. Patients with a record of UCD or Urea Cycle Disorder are also prohibited to take Depakote medication.
It is indeed really helpful to know all the facts regarding the appropriate ways in medicating with Depakote. Ask your doctor if you need to update your diet or decrease intake of other medicines. Alcohol is definitely a no-no with Depakote. The doctor will require you to change a bit of your lifestyle so be cooperative.
