Some drugs are not really meant to cure diseases. Take the case of Diovan drugs. Diovan is a brand name of Valsartan – a drug used to regulate hypertension or high blood pressure but not is taken as a cure. The adverse effect of hypertension is kidney damage that often results to heart failure or stroke. Diovan can be taken to avoid the occurrence of such event.

Diovan is proven to be an effective drug for hypertension. Diovan tablets are classified as angiotensin II receptor blockers or ARBs. Diovan works by reducing the formation of a specific chemical element in the body called angiotensin II. This chemical is responsible for constricting the blood vessels during pumping of blood. With the reduction of angiotensin II formation, chance of heightening the blood pressure is prevented while blood vessels get relaxed.

Consult with your doctor about this drug. Additionally, it helps to know some important things that you need to consider when taking Diovan. Your doctor will check your body’s current condition like heart failure, kidney disease, renal artery stenosis, breathing difficulty, tightening throat, swallowing difficulty, hoarseness, inflammation of the lips, tongue or face, liver disease, potassium level in the body and allergies to certain drugs, to Diovan ingredients or even food. You should also inform your doctor of your low-salt diet, your pregnancy or plans to get pregnant and breast-feeding.

Diovan tablets should be taken orally with a full glass of water. Always follow your doctor’s prescription. Never miss a dose and do not increase or decrease your dosage unless your doctor tells you so. You can take Diovan tables with or without your regular meal. Observe on time dosing of Diovan. If you skipped a dose, resume dosing on the next schedule if it’s too late to catch up, but do not double dose. Always have extra Diovan tablets with you in the office, at home, or when you’re out on a trip.

Some drugs can interact with Diovan, so discuss with your doctor about your other hypertension medication: lithium drug, hawthorn, Emsam, Eldepryl and other monoamine oxidase inhibitors, potassium supplements, amiloride, triamterene and other water pills. Include every drug you are taking that is not mentioned in the list whether a prescription or not, food supplement or herbal medication. All of these drugs could affect the performance of Diovan or the other way around. Your doctor may advise you to stop any of those drugs you are presently taking.

Aside from drug interaction, there are other things that you need to watch like smoking and drinking. You definitely have to adjust your current lifestyle now that you are taking medicines. You also need to watch on your blood pressure regularly. Keep track and record your blood pressure and see if these results are improvement outputs. Always have a regular check up session with your doctor to observe your condition’s development.

Avoid heavy duty tasks, driving and other jobs that require mind attentiveness. Ask your doctor if it’s okay to use any salt substitutes. If you will undergo surgical operation, make sure to mention your Diovan medication. You can also get dizzy by suddenly standing up or sitting up so be gentle with your moves. Diovan ingredients can affect the well being of the child inside the womb of a mother, so if you are planning to be pregnant makes sure to inform your doctor about this.

There are some Diovan side effects though that don’t need any medical attention. However, if you feel uneasy with them, you can contact your doctor right away. Common side effects are cough, fatigue, headache and nausea. Serious side effects include swallowing difficulty, tightening throat, breathing difficulty, swelling of the feet, hands, tongue, lips or face, rashes and sexual problems.

To retain effectiveness of Diovan, keep it in a safe storage place with temperature not exceeding 30 degrees. Diovan drugs work only to relax your blood vessels; you should also do your part by following your doctor’s direction.
