The generic name for Flexeril is Cyclobenzaprine. It is recommended by doctors as medical relief for muscle pain, muscle stiffness and muscle spasms. The active ingredient of Flexeril influences the CNS or Central Nervous System in the process of relaxing the muscles.

Prior to taking this medicine, the doctor will need to know if you have any specific allergic reaction to food, drugs, substances, Cyclobenzaprine, preservatives and dyes. The doctor will also consider pregnancy in women and breast feeding. Furthermore the doctor will examine your body of any medical conditions like glaucoma, urination disorder, heart disease and blood vessel disease, overactive thyroid, cerebral palsy, heartbeat irregularities and history of heart attack.

Inform your doctor if you are taking other drugs. This might interact with your Flexeril medication. Flexeril may interact with benztropine, atropine, dicyclomine, guanaethidine, guanadrel, hay fever drugs, medicines for allergies, drugs for mental depression, drugs for mental disorder, trihexyphenidyl, tricyclic antidepressants, clomiparmine, desipramine, doxepin, trimipramine, imipramine, protriptyline, amitriptyline and nortriptyline, tranylcypromine, phenelzine, cyclobenzaprine, selegiline, procabazine and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Discuss with your doctor if you drink alcohol and caffeinated beverages, if you smoke, or take illegal drugs. Also inform your doctor of your medication with over-the-counter drugs, herbal medicines, herbal preparations and dietary supplements.

Once prescribed, make sure to follow your doctor’s directions stringently. Make on time dosing and avoid skipping a dose. Should you miss a single dose, catch up a dose if it’s not yet an hour later than the missed schedule, otherwise, resume intake in the succeeding schedule. Do not try to double dose to catch up a missed one. Inform you doctor as well of this skipping.

Over dosage may also cause side effects. You may feel any of the following side effects: hallucinations, drowsiness, seizures, breathing trouble, changes in the body temperature, vomiting and restlessness.

Most side effects are common with Flexeril and may not necessarily require immediate medical attention. These side effects occur in the first few weeks of treatment; however, they will subside or disappear after the following weeks. If your experience with any of these side effects become intolerable, notify your doctor the soonest time possible. Common side effects include the following: dryness in the mouth, drowsiness, lightheadedness and blurry vision.

Rare side effects include: vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, indigestion, bloating, nervousness, frequency of urination, headaches, numbness, throbbing of the heart, speech difficulty, twitching of the muscle, diarrhea, hand and feat weakness, sleeping trouble, changes of taste, uncommon tiredness and mouth trembling.

The most common problem associated with Flexeril is overdosing. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the prescription. If possible, write a log of your Flexeril intake. Inform your doctor immediately of your overdose.
