The generic name of Flomax is Tamsulosin. It has been known as an effective drug for treating symptoms of prostate gland enlargement in male patients. This is often referred to by medical experts as BPH or benign prostate hyperplasia. Other names for this disorder are benign prostatic hypertrophy, nodular hyperplasia and benign enlargement of the prostate or BEP. This disease is often found on middle aged and elder male patients.

Symptoms of this disease are categorized as irritative and obstructive. Obstructive symptoms are those symptoms that display, intermittency, straining, weak urination, incomplete voiding, hesitancy to urinate and intermittency. On the other hand, irritative symptoms are urination frequency and urgency to urinate.

By treating the painful and uncomfortable symptomatic effects of benign prostatic hyperplasia, Flomax works by relaxing the prostate and bladder muscles specifically at the area of obstruction. By relaxing these muscles, it improves and helps the stream of urine.

Before taking this drug, the doctor first needs to know if you possess any of the following medical conditions. The doctor will check on kidney disease, liver disease, prostate cancer, low blood pressure or hypotension. The doctor will also check on your body’s delicate reaction to food, preservatives, substances, certain drugs and Flomax ingredients.

Certain drugs also interact with the main component of Flomax. Discuss with your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines: hypertension medicines, cimetidine, sildenafil, warfarin, tadalafil, vardenafil, prazosin, phentolamine, doxazosin, prazosin and terazosin. The doctor needs to check on these drugs since simultaneous treatment of any of them might cause unfavorable effect on your body. With this examination, the doctor may decide to discontinue medication with other drugs you are using, adjust dosage of your other medication, adjust your Flomax dosage or delay your Flomax treatment.

But once you are prescribed with Flomax, make sure you familiarize yourself with all the instructions given to you by your doctor. Make a log of your Flomax intake. Be on time with your dosing and do not skip a dose. If possible bring with you extra capsules in your bag.

Read the Flomax label to get more information on its proper use. On the average, the doctor recommends intake of 0.4 milligram Flomax capsule once a day, half an hour after the regular meal by an adult patient.

Tell your doctor if you have accidentally missed a single dose. Do not try to double dose on the next day in order to catch up the missed one.

Side effects of Flomax can vary from less to more common. More common Flomax side effects include uncommon weakness, runny nose, stuffy nose, dizziness, diarrhea, headache, and back pain.

Less common side effects of Flomax include sleeping difficulty, decrease in sexual performance, ejaculation problems, lightheadedness, faintness, chest pain, nausea and drowsiness. There might still be other side effects of Flomax so be sure to notify your doctor if your experience with any of the Flomax side effects becomes unbearable.

Retrograde ejaculation is one common but disturbing side effect of Flomax. It is characterized by the redirection of male fluid towards to urinary bladder instead of flowing out through the urethra. This happens because the relaxing effect of Flomax makes the bladder sphincter not to contract thereby redirecting the sperm flow to another passage. This occurrence however is not considered harmful.

The only way you can maximize the potential of this drug is to follow the directions of your Flomax prescription. Give your doctor a regular visit to monitor the progress of your condition. Keep your Flomax capsules in a safe place, out of the children’s’ reach.
