Having allergic rhinitis and asthma is such a troubling and upsetting disorder for a patient of any age. It limits your activity. You can’t smell flowers and you can’t even go out on that most anticipated summer outdoor picnic. Fortunately, these allergies are now relieved, thanks to drugs like Flonase.
The generic name for Flonase is Fluticasone Propionate. This component is referred to as an effective synthetic corticosteroid. In pharmaceutics, Flonase is a member of a group of drugs called steroids. Additionally, Flonase either belongs to two subclasses: Corticosteroid Nasal and Anti-inflammatory - steroidal – nasal. Flonase is a nasal drug; it is inhaled or sprayed into the nostrils to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and asthma like hay fever, nasal troubles, irritation and stuffy nose.
Asthma is said to be a respiratory chronic disorder. It is characterized by the inflammation of the airway and accumulation of large mucus contents. The symptoms of this disease is often initiated with the presence of specific conditions such as exercise, stress, depression, moist air, warm, cold air and pollens.
Allergic rhinitis is also called hay fever. It is caused by environmental factors, specifically pollens, grains and other microscopic substances from plants that are carried by wind.
Before applying or inhaling Flonase, the physician or a health care expert must first examine the conditions of the patient. The doctor will check on asthma, nose bleeding, certain infections, herpes, fungal infection, chickenpox, tuberculosis and other viral infection and allergies to corticosteroids, Fluticasone, certain drugs, food and preservatives. The doctor will also need to check on pregnancy and breast feeding.
Other medical conditions that are to be considered are amebiases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, glaucoma, nose injury, nose sores, underactive thyroid, weak heart condition and history of heart attack. Presence of any of the preceding conditions may aggravate the symptoms. It may also affect the prescription of your physician. In certain conditions like diabetes, treatment with Flonase may worsen the blood glucose control and reduce the tolerance of carbohydrate resulting to more dosage of insulin.
After you have received your prescription, make sure you are oriented with proper directions of using Flonase. Always remember the schedule given to you and try not to miss a single schedule. You can read the Flonase label to get more information on it use and application. You may need to have a nurse or somebody to assist you on your treatment if you are not sure how to use it.
Before spraying, clean your nostrils with a clean cloth. Blow the nose to remove dirt. But try not to irritate your nose. Then carefully place the nosepiece inside the nostrils and spray to the direction of the eye corner. Flonase must be used according to what is scheduled so that beneficial effects will be achieved. Complete improvement of condition will be felt after three weeks of treatment. Flonase should be used only as a symptomatic treatment for hay fever and asthma and not for conditions other than what is directed.
For average treatment of allergic rhinitis and other nose problems, children 6 years old and below are usually directed by the physician. For patients above 6 years old, the doctor will usually recommend single spray in each nose hole 2 to 4 times a day.
Side effects of Flonase can range from less to more common. If any of these side effects become bothersome, check with your doctor right away. He may need to adjust your treatment if your body reacts delicately to the ingredients of Flonase.
More common Flonase side effects include irritation, sneezing, throat irritation and dryness of the nose. Some rare or less common side effects are bloody mucus, unusual bleeding of the nose, eyelid swelling and eye pain.
Check with your doctor if you feel any bothering Flonase nasal spray side effects not mentioned. You may be developing some allergic reactions to Flonase or side effects might be worsened with other factors. Do not adjust spraying dosage if not directed by your doctor.
