The generic name for Levoxyl is Levothyroxine, and is mainly used in treating the different kinds of goiters and low thyroid activity. Thyroid hormones are very important in regulating the metabolism of the body. When there’s low thyroid activity, not enough thyroid hormones are produced. This results into low metabolism. When this happens, physicians recommend Levoxyl for thyroid hormonal problems. This is because Levoxyl has components that result in an increase in production of thyroid hormones.
Since Levoxyl is taken just to increase the production of thyroid hormones, which is quite a typical process in human anatomy, then it should be a given that any person can take Levoxyl, right? Even if this notion does make sense, this is not the case at all. There are certain times when patients should not take Levoxyl at all.
If the patient has a particular thyroid disorder that is termed as thyrotocixosis, then the Levoxyl medicine is not for him or her. Patients who have had a heart attack or certain adrenal gland problems should also inform their physicians of these as well. If they have had such, then the Levoxyl medicine is still not for them.
There are other medical conditions that should be disclosed before patients undergo Levoxyl treatment. Levoxyl medication can complicate such medical conditions: heart disease, especially coronary artery disease, diabetes, anemia, and problems with the adrenal and pituitary glands. Should the patient have any of these medical conditions, he or she should inform the physician before starting their Levoxyl medication. Not doing such could be further damaging.
But if the patient is indeed fit to take Levoxyl, then he or she should make sure to take the medication as it has been prescribed. Keep in mind the recommended Levoxyl dosage. Patients should not take more than the Levoxyl dosage that has been recommended. They should also not take Levoxyl for more than the recommended period.
There may also be times when physicians would change the Levoxyl dosage. But this is not out of the ordinary because physicians occasionally do this, to ensure proper treatment for patients. If this happens, then make sure to follow the recommended Levoxyl dosage.
Levoxyl also has its share of side effects, although a lot of patients have reported not experiencing any at all. Still, it pays to be aware of the possible side effects, should there be a need to stop treatment because of them.
The possible Levoxyl side effects include anxiety, mood swings, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, and hair loss. Levoxyl hair loss, however, is just temporary. This particular side effect will subside once the treatment goes underway.
But there are also possible side effects that entail the treatment being stopped right away. These side effects are severe in nature. These negative effects of Levoxyl can only worsen the patient’s condition, if treatment is not stopped immediately. These side effects include hives, breathing problems, swelling of the facial features, appetite and menstrual period changes, fast heartbeat, leg cramps, seizures, tremors, and hyperactivity. There are other side effects to look out for. But these are the more common ones.
Overdoses of Levoxyl rarely occur. But one can never be too careful these days. Be on the lookout for the following symptoms, which might indicate an overdose: chest pain, disorientation, seizures, tremors, severe chest pain, heart attack, coma, and extreme shock. When such symptoms are exhibited, be sure to have the patient checked by the physician right away. Prolonging the condition can only worsen things for the patient. Immediate medical assistance can lead to better chances of thwarting such fatal effects.
As always, keep Levoxyl out of children’s reach. The side effects of Levoxyl can be very harmful to adults already, let alone to children. Levoxyl should also be kept at room temperature. Make sure to store the bottle away from heat and light. Moisture can degrade the quality of Levoxyl, and just might cause harmful effects for the patient taking the medication.
