Lisinopril is one of the most prescribed drugs worldwide. Lisinopril is a drug used in treating high blood pressure. It is also used to treat congestive heart failure, and to better the chances of survival after a heart attack. Lisinopril can be taken alone, or it can also be taken with other medications used in treating high blood pressure. This depends on the orders of your physician. But whether Lisinopril is taken with or without other forms of medication, it remains an effective drug.
But what is Lisinopril exactly? The medicine Lisinopril is actually an ACE inhibitor drug. ACE is an acronym for angiotensin converting enzyme. Every human being has a particular substance that is responsible for the retention of salt and water in the body. And Lisinopril specializes in that aspect.
Generally, Lisinopril should be taken regularly for it to reach its maximum effect. This is especially true when you have high blood pressure. Blood pressure does not really decline immediately. It takes after a gradual pattern. So, don’t expect immediate effects when you take Lisinopril. It may take several weeks before you feel any significant effects of Lisinopril. And when you do feel better, do not stop taking it. Even your physician would strongly advise against this. The sudden absence of the drug can lead to an increase in blood pressure all over again.
Also, remember that Lisinopril does not cure high blood pressure at all. Lisinopril just keeps your blood pressure in tow. It merely controls your blood pressure from going high.
Lisinopril can be taken on a full and empty stomach. So, you don’t really have to take it with meals. Just be sure to take it as prescribed by your physician. If, by chance, you miss a dose of Lisinopril, take it as soon as you remember the missed dosage. But if it’s almost time for your next dose, then don’t take the missed dose anymore. Just skip the missed dose altogether, and stick to your regular dose schedule. It is very important to remember not to take two doses of Lisinopril at the same instance. This can prove to be very harmful. This is because your blood pressure might go too low, and this condition should be avoided as well.
Just like any other drug, Lisinopril has its own fare of side effects. The more common side effects of Lisinopril are low blood pressure, headache, chest pain, dizziness, cough and colds. If these Lisinopril side effects occur, do not panic right away. These are indeed the more common ones. Just be sure to inform your physician. Your physician alone can find out for you if it’s safe to go on with your Lisinopril medication.
However, there are serious Lisinopril side effects as well. Should these more serious side effects occur, then you should contact your physician immediately. These symptoms include sore throat, facial swelling, fever, breathing or swallowing problems. Also, Lisinopril has been known to cause abdominal cramps or pain, but without nausea and vomiting. This is because ACE inhibitors can indeed cause intestinal swelling at times. If this should happen, contact your physician right away.
If you have certain medical conditions, like congestive heart failure, kidney disorders, or connective tissue disorders, Lisinopril can still be used. But take precautionary measures when taking Lisinopril. Inform your physician of such medical conditions as well, because you might need to undertake blood tests once in a while. This is to determine whether or not it is safe for you to continue your Lisinopril medication.
Be wary of overdoses. An overdose of Lisinopril would lead to a significant decline in your blood pressure. If suspicion arises that this is indeed happening, don’t wait for clarification. Seek medical assistance right away. This is a condition that should not be prolonged.
