Mevacor

Mevacor is a drug used in lowering high levels of cholesterol, and is also used to treat the symptoms of diseases related to hypertension. Generic Mevacor is actually Lovastatin. When you’re under Mevacor medication, you are supposed to be on a prescribed diet as well. Mevacor cannot work effectively without this prescribed diet. This is because Mevacor acts as a mere supplemental drug. You still have to stick to the diet and to the exercise program prescribed to you.

Mevacor is also used to lessen the risks of heart attack and chest pains that are brought about by angina. With proper diet, Mevacor can slow down blockage of blood vessels. This process can diminish the necessity of going through certain medical procedures just to open the heart blood vessels that have been blocked.

From the generic Mevacor alone, Lovastatin, it is obvious that the drug is also one of the “statins”. Statin is the layman’s term for an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor. This indicates that Mevacor reduces the production of a number of fatty substances. This includes cholesterol.

Just like any drug in the market, there are also Mevacor side effects to be wary about. If you are allergic to any components of Mevacor, then you should not take this at all. To be sure you’re not allergic to Mevacor, have your physician check you out. You may have to undergo a series of tests for this to be determined.

If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or nursing, then you should not take Mevacor as well. Mevacor can cause serious birth defects. This is why you should not take this at all, if you’re pregnant. If you are already undergoing treatment, and you suspect that you might be with child, consult your physician right away. It must be determined immediately whether or not you are indeed pregnant. From there, your physician should then determine whether or not you should stop your treatment.

Mevacor should be taken as specified by your physician. Generally, Mevacor should be taken with your meals. You should be vigilant about your dosing schedule, and stick to it as much as possible. Try not to miss a dose during your treatment. If you do miss a dose, however, it is important for you to take it as soon as it comes to mind. But if it is almost time for your next dose, then it would be better to let the missed dose pass. Just skip it altogether, and retain your original schedule. It is very important to remember that two doses of Mevacor should never be taken at the same time. Should this happen, there could be serious side effects of Mevacor.

In a general sense, the side effects of Mevacor are quite mild. And they are quite temporary as well. In fact, they just manifest themselves during the onset of the treatment. Once the treatment goes underway, most side effects subside already. But if ever these side effects do become more intense, then there should be cause for worry already. This is why it is always better to keep your physician informed of whatever side effects of Mevacor you’re experiencing. It is your physician alone who can determine whether or not it would still be safe for you to continue your Mevacor treatment. The common side effects include abdominal cramps, blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, diarrhea, headache, indigestion, muscle cramps and weakness, rashes, nausea, and dizziness.

The most important thing to remember about Mevacor is that it cannot work if you don’t stick to the prescribed diet for you. So, just stick with the diet, and the drug should be able to start taking effect in no time at all.
