The generic name for Premarin is conjugated estrogens. This contains a combination of diverse estrogen hormones. Premarin is given to a patient who may be suffering from functional abnormalities caused by hormonal problems. It’s often a medicine of choice for treating the symptoms of menopausal condition such as vaginal irritation, vaginal dryness, mood swings, evening sweats and hot flashes. Although not considered an ultimate cure, but Premarin can help prevent osteoporosis – a medical condition characterized by the reduction of mineral density in the bone. Doctors also recommend Premarin to patients who are having hormone imbalance or ovarian disorders. This is also prescribed to male patients who have inoperable prostate cancer or female patients who have incurable breast cancer.

Before taking Premarin your doctor should know first about your present medical condition. The doctor will need to check on: blood vessel disease, asthma, blood clotting problem, previous stroke, breast cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer and uterine cancer, diabetes, endometriosis, fibroids in the womb, heart disease, hypertension, increased blood lipids, increased level of cholesterol in the blood, increased level of blood calcium, decreased level of blood calcium, hysterectomy, liver disease, kidney disease, mental depression, porphyria, migraine, SLE or systematic lupus erythematosus, thyroid disease, tobacco smoker, allergic reaction to estrogen containing medicines, allergic reaction to hormone drugs, allergic reaction to food, preservatives, dyes and other substances.

When taking this medicine, make sure you follow all the directions given to you by your doctor. To get more information on using this drug, read the Premarin label. Take your Premarin tablet whole. Follow up intake with a full glass of drinking water. Ask your doctor if it is fine to take Premarin with your regular meal. Be prompt with your dosing and be consistent with your schedule too. Always have an extra supply of Premarin tablets in your bag, so wherever you go, you will not miss out on your schedule. But if it happens that you miss a dose, just take your Premarin tablet the soonest time you remember. If it is too late to catch up, just resume intake on the next schedule. Drugs that interact with Premarin are: cimetidine, bromocriptine, cabamazepine, cyclosporine, dantrolene, anastrazole, barbiturate drugs, benzodiazepine, drugs for sleep disorders, drugs for convulsion, drugs for diabetes, exemestane, griseofulvin, methotrexate, hydrocortisone, prednisolone, cortisone, Letrozole, isoniazid, Phenytoin, mineral oil, Tamoxifen, Raloxifene, rifabutin, rifapentine, rifampin, testolactone, thyroid hormones, topiramate, warfarin and tricyclic anti-depressant.

Tell your doctor more about your medicines including those over the counter drugs, herbal drugs and dietary supplements. The doctor must also check your alcohol intake, cigarette smoking, use of caffeinated beverages and use of illegal drugs.

Report it to your doctor, if you begin to show side effects of Premarin. Premarin side effects that needs doctor’s attention are chest pain, confusion, leg pain, forgetfulness, pain in the groin, arm pain, enlargement of the breast, bleeding, vomiting, nausea, breath shortness, swelling of the feet, swelling of the ankles, visual changes and headache.

Other side effects of Premarin are normal. But if your experience becomes bothersome, notify your doctor soon. Always keep your Premarin tablet in a safe place apart from the children’s access, excessive sunlight, moist and dust.
