One common brand in progesterone drugs is Prometrium. It’s a female hormone prescribed by doctors to patients who are suffering from amenorrhea. Although a supporting medication, Prometrium can improve the condition of these patients who experienced the deficiency of progesterone in their system resulting to menstrual absence. Prometrium is best taken to stop the excessive growth of the lining in the uterus common in postmenopausal patients.

Before taking Prometrium, consult first a doctor and see if you have medical conditions that may affect the performance of the drug. The doctor needs to check on conditions such as blood clotting problem, disease of the blood vessel, history of stroke, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, breast cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, diabetes, increased level of lipid in the blood, increased level of cholesterol in the blood, migraine, convulsion, vaginal bleeding, history of miscarriage, mental depression, hysterectomy and allergic reaction to foods, dyes, preservatives, substances, drugs, hormone drugs, peanut oil and even Prometrium ingredients.

The doctor will also consider pregnancy, plan to pregnant and breast-feeding.

There are drugs that interact with Prometrium, so watch out for these drugs. Drug interaction may result to severity of side effects or allergic development. The doctor may recommend you to stop any of the present medications you are taking, may adjust progesterone dosage or may disqualify you from further taking Prometrium.

Drugs that interact with Prometrium include: voriconazole, Phenytoin, cabamazepine, rifampin, bromocriptine, ketoconazole, barbiturate, drugs for seizures and certain sleep-inducing drugs.

Inform your doctor more about your present and previous medication. It will also be helpful if the doctor will know about your intake with OTC medicines, herbal drugs, dietary supplements, alcohol intake, nicotine intake, caffeine intake and use of illegal drugs.

More common Prometrium side effects are yellowish discoloration of the eyes or the skin, affected vision, weakness, tiredness, speech difficulty, stomach pain, severe headache, chest pain, tenderness of the breast and pain in the abdominal area.

Side effects of Prometrium that are less common and must need the doctor’s attention are the following: headache, retention of fluid, swelling, unusual growth of hair on the face, change of sexual activity, loss of weight and weight gain.
