The generic name for Proventil is salbutamol. In the United States, Proventil is generically named as albuterol. The active ingredients of Proventil are referred to as bronchodilator. Bronchodilator medicines are medicines that facilitate the ease of breathing by opening up the air passages. Breathing difficulty is one of the symptoms of patients suffering from lung disorders like chronic bronchitis and asthma, an umbrella term for airflow disorders is COPD or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. There are different forms of Proventil, there are Proventil HFA, Proventil Oral, Provintil Repetabs, Proventil Nebulizer Solution and Proventil Inhalers. The Proventil inhaler form is more common. A common symptom of COPD is bronchospasm, it is a breathing difficulty condition caused by abrupt muscle constriction in the bronchioles walls.

Before taking this medicine, the patient first must meet with his doctor in order to have a medical examination. The doctor will need to check certain conditions that might hamper the performance of Proventil medicine in the body. With the presence of certain medical conditions, the doctor may approve prescription, disapprove prescription or adjust the dosage. Medical conditions that need to be examined are lung disease, convulsion, pheochromocytoma, decreased level of potassium in the blood, heart disease, heartbeat irregularity, diabetes, thyroid disease and high blood pressure. The doctor will also consider allergic reactions to food, preservatives, dyes, substances, certain drugs like sulfites, levalabuterol and even Proventil.

There is also a list of drugs that interact with Proventil. So it is best for you and your doctor that you discuss any medication you are currently taking. Proventil interactions may result to unwanted effects. Drugs that interact with Proventil are astemizole, bepridil, arsenic trioxide, beta blockers, arsenic trioxide, caffeine, clarithromycin, levofloxacin, sparfloxacin, maxifloxacin, gemifloxacin, gatifloxacin, grepafloxacin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, chloroquine, levomethadyl, halofantrine, droperidol, cisapride, MAO inhibitors, selegiline, isocarboxazid, tranylcpromine, phenelzine, heart disease medicines, high blood pressure medicines, drugs for breathing difficulty, drugs for colds, methadone, risperidone, phenothiazines, pimozide, maprotiline, haloperidol, amoxapine, other drugs for depression, sotalol, quinidine, procainamide, flecainide, dofetilide, dispyramide, Amiodarone, terfenadine, cortisone, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone, weight reduction drugs, dextramphetamine, ephedrine, ephedra, probucol, pentamedine, water pills, thyroid hormones and theophylline.

Make sure your doctor also knows about your other non-prescribed drugs, herbal drugs, herbal preparation and dietary supplements. The doctor must also know about your intake of alcohol, caffeinated beverages and use of illegal drugs.

Some side effects of Proventil are more common. These Proventil side effects may not need immediate attention of the doctor. But should your experience with any of these more common side effects become intolerable, notify your doctor the soonest. More common side effects of Proventil are: change in the taste, nasal congestion, stomach upsetting, runny nose, mild irritation in the throat, headache, mouth drying, sleeping difficulty, diarrhea, cough, trembling, nervousness and anxiety.

Rare but serious side effects or Proventil require immediate medical attention. These side effects are vomiting, numbing of the toes, numbing of the fingers, muscle weakness, muscle cramps, severe headache, fever, faster heartbeat, pain in the chest, faintness, dizziness, breathing difficulty and heartbeat irregularity.

Once given the prescription, make sure you follow all the important instructions in administering the Proventil inhaler. Always be prompt with your schedule. Have someone to assist you if you are having difficulty administering the drug. If after a period of time, your condition does not improve do not discontinue using Proventil. Inform your doctor of this feeling. Avoid putting Proventil inhaler contents in the eyes.

Mouth dryness can be bothersome. To address this, drink sufficient amount of water. Keep your Proventil inhaler in a safe and clean storage place. Do not let anybody use your inhaler. Visit your doctor regularly. Asking questions about your condition with your doctor is good than doing nothing at all.
