Provera

The generic name for Provera is medroxyprogesterone. It is a drug used as a treatment for female patients who are experiencing menstrual cycle irregularities, absence of menstrual periods and even abnormal bleeding of the uterus which is a result of hormone imbalance in the system. When Provera is taken, its role is to support and maintain the proper female functions. The active ingredient of Provera serves as a helpful progesterone hormone. In normal production, progesterone is important in achieving normal function of a woman’s reproductive system.

Check first with a health care expert or your doctor to see if your body’s condition makes you fit for using Provera. Certain medical conditions may hinder the treating effects of Provera in a patient. The doctor needs to check on the following conditions: migraine, seizures, mental depression, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, breast cancer, disease of the blood vessel, blood clotting problem, history of stroke, asthma and vaginal bleeding. The doctor will also consider pregnancy, breast feeding and allergic reactions to food, dyes, preservatives, substances, certain drugs, hormones and even Provera.

Certain drugs interact differently with Provera. Drug interactions may result to allergies, worsening of side effects and hampering of Provera’s effectiveness. Drugs that interact with Provera are antibiotics, rifabutin, griseofulvin, rifapentine, rifampin, phenobabrital, other barbiturates, bosentan, bromocriptine, drugs for convulsions, primidone, Phenytoin, carbamezepine, modafinil and St. John’s wort.

Inform your doctor more about your present and past medications. This will help the doctor in deciding your prescription. He may recommend discontinuation of some of the medicines you are taking, adjust your Prevora dosage or adjust your other medication. The doctor must also need to know about your intake of other non-prescribed medicines, alcoholic beverages, caffeinated beverages and use of illegal drugs.

Once you are given the prescription, be oriented with all the important instructions in taking the Provera drug. You must take Prevora tablet whole. Do not crush, chew, cut or squeeze the Prevora tablet unless your doctor tells so. In order to facilitate swallowing of the Prevora tablet, drink plenty of water and sit up straight during gulping. Always be on time and be consistent with your dosing schedule. Do not have more of the Prevora tablets if not directed by your doctor.

Avoid missing a schedule. This will affect your medication. But if this happens, contact your doctor to be sure of the right thing to do. Do not attempt to double your Prevora doses without your doctor’s knowledge. Usually, if it’s nearly time for the next schedule, you can just skip the missed dose and resume intake on the next dose.

Side effects of Prevora range from less common to more common. Less common Prevora side effects may be serious and must need to be referred to your doctor to get expert medical advice. The soonest time your body displays any of the serious side effects of Prevora, contact your doctor immediately. Less common side effects are yellowish discoloration of the skin or the eyes, affected vision, speech difficulty, uncommon tiredness or weakness, difficulty in catching up a breath, severe headache, pain in the stomach, chest pain, pain in the leg or the groin, numbing of the leg, numbing of the arms and unusual discharge of substance from the breast.

Some of the more common side effects of Provera that may not need immediate doctor’s attention are fungal infection in the vagina, mood swings and sweat increase. If these side effects occur persistently, contact your doctor soonest.

Mouth problems that are associated with Provera treatment must need to be checked by a dentist. Furthermore, ask your doctor on the frequency of your check up. This will record your condition’s improvement and will let you know how well you respond to the medicine.
