Risperdal
Risperdal is a brand of risperidone, a drug developed by Janssen Pharmaceutica. It is prescribed for treating neurological disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
It has an FDA-approved formulation for treating disorders including autism in children.
The following are the possible indications for the need to utilize Risperdal medication:
- Schizophrenia – is a mental disorder with a characteristic of perception impairments, delusion, auditory hallucination and bizarre expression of reality. Schizophrenic experiences hearing words from an invisible character, character creation, and paranoia. Most schizophrenics are not aware of their conditions.
- Bipolar disorder – generally called manic depression, is a condition wherein a person has an irregular pattern of extreme mood to unbridled mania. Risperdal and weight gain are associated during the administration of the drug. The weight gain can be mild, but moderate gaining of weight is also attributed from the drug.
Risperdal overdose can have serious effects on the individual. It has the potential to cause the following:
- Sexual dysfunction may happen to males. This can lead to have retrograde ejaculation, a condition in which the sperm goes through the urinary bladder instead of exiting to the urethra.
- Eventual lactation in each gender. Antipsychotic drug can increase production of prolactin. The prolactin if raised into an abnormal level can cause pituitary gland tumor.
- The long-term of use of antipsychotic drug can lead one to have tardive dyskinesia, a condition of impairment in the voluntary movement.
- Extrapyramidal symptoms are disorders characterized by the inability to do first movement and remain motionless.
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome – is caused by an adverse reaction to antipsychotic drugs. It is characterized by a fever associated with rigidity of muscles. It can affect the cognitive functions of an individual.
- Triggers diabetes
- Higher risk of cardiac arrest
These conditions can be elevated during the medication of the drug. Administration of the drug should be done with the qualified caregiver and psychiatrist. Most patients who have been prescribed with Risperdal are confined or are being strictly watched in a ward or at a safe sanctuary such as a home.
