Living by the code OSI-774, Tarceva is one new medication deemed to be potent in treating symptoms and signs of cancer, particularly lung cancer. It was just recently found out to be capable of treating that condition after a number of successful clinical trials were conducted.
Well, according to the majority of the Tarceva clinical trials, this new prescription medication works to treat almost all types of cancer in simple mechanism. What is involved basically is that when taken or applied to the body, Tarceva will act as an effective substance that will inhibit the action and growth of EGF or epidermal growth factor. The body produces this “factor” in a normal way, but an excess production of this will promote development and spread of cells, which in turn is capable of producing and making the tyrosine kinase enzyme active once it gets contact with the receptors of EGF. This action is what triggers cancer cells to grow and develop to destroy the bodily system. So to make this cancer cells growth impossible to happen, Tarceva must then be applied according to what is professionally directed.
Speaking of directions, the anti-cancer drug Tarceva is recommended for use without much hassle. It is easy to take provided that proper directions, as determined by the doctor, are followed. Typically, your doctor will require you to start taking a dose of this medication for about 150 milligrams one hour prior to eating. It can also be taken two hours after meals, and this must be maintained to avoid any possible interactions between this medication and the food you eat. Well, the primary reason behind this avoidance is that if Tarceva is taken with food, the body can’t absorb it perfectly.
There are also certain drugs or medications that Tarceva may interact with. In the first place, patients who are taking this medication aren’t allowed to take drugs that work to inhibit the liver enzyme known as CYP3A4, which is capable of breaking down the Tarceva in the body. When taken together, cancer patient may suffer from toxicity, which is but another serious condition that needs medical attention. If you are not familiar with the specific drugs belonging to CYP3A4 group, then here are few of the many: Biaxin, Sporanox, Invirase, Viracept, Reyataz, Serzone, Crixivan, Norvir, VFEND, Nizoral, and Ketek. If you are currently using one of these medications and you are opting for Tarceva, see your doctor immediately before taking one or both of them.
Pregnant women are also not allowed to take the medication for several reasons. On the most basic, several studies have shown that Tarceva can possibly cause the condition known as maternal toxicity, which in turn can impair the growth of the fetus in the womb. To avoid further complications, mothers taking the medication are required to avoid getting pregnant.
When any of those interactions are ignored, it is expected for patients suffering from cancer to experience a wide variety of Tarceva side effects that may or may not be life threatening. The most common of these side effects are diarrhea, rashes, fatigue, and loss of appetite. These symptoms, according to several claims, may manifest in about half of all cancer patients who are taking the medicine. The good thing to note, however, is that these symptoms only appear mild. But, in terms of serious side effects, certain studies show that Tarceva can possibly cause death.
So if you are treated with Tarceva and you are experiencing any of the mild and serious symptoms of the medication, it is always important for you to ask for immediate medical attention or help. Contact an expert and you’ll be subjected to a number of tests to monitor your condition and success of the treatment. If you’re lucky enough, Tarceva can help you recover from lung cancer or its sisters.
