Toprol, or more accurately Toprol-XL is the marketed brand name of the generic name Metoprolol.
General Information
A beta-adrenergic blocker (β-blocker), Metoprolol is a drug used for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia (tachycardia), the prevention of angina attacks in coronary heart disease, prevention after a myocardial infarction, hypertension, and several other cardiovascular diseases. Novartis, under the brand name Lopressor and Toprol XL (in United States) releases the generic name Metoprolol; Alphapharm markets Metoprolol under the brand name Minax; AstraZeneca markets Metoprolol as Betaloc; and Berlin-Chemie AG under the brand name Corvitol.
Beta-blockers are drug classifications used primarily for the management of cardiovascular problems. These drugs inhibit the epinephrine-mediated sympathetic nervous system reaction, reducing the effect of the response of the body, particularly in the cardiovascular, whenever the sympathetic nervous response is triggered. Simply put, they lower the intensity of the response whenever anxiety or excitement or any strong feelings take place.
Metoprolol forces the heart rate to lower levels during the epinephrine-mediated sympathetic reactions. By reducing the force of the muscle contraction of the heart, it also reduces oxygen demand, along with several more effects: reduction of the dilation of blood vessels, the breakdown of glycogen and reduces epinephrine caused tremor.
Prescription
Metroprolol needs prescription. The generic available is Lopressor. These tablets come in 50 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg tablets, for prolonged actions tablets, 50 mg and 100 mg are available. Common prescription for oral dosage in treating hypertension or angina is 10 to 450 mg per day, and can be taken as single or divided doses, before meals or bedtime. The effect of the drug is usually realized after 2 hours (oral dosage) and takes effect up to 10 to 14 days. Metoprolol is also available in liquid form and is intravenously administered. The drug is administered in three doses of 5 mg shots in a two-minute interval. The drug takes effect, lowering blood pressure and preventing heart attacks up to 10 to 14 days.
Metoprolol is prescribed to patients suffering hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (caused when there is lack of oxygen in the heart), cardiac arrhythmia (abnormal heart rates), and several other cardiovascular problems. Also, Metoprolol is also prescribed treatment for migraine prophylaxis, various forms of tremors, and also as adjunct treatment for hyperthyroidism.
Drug Interactions And Side effects
In general, Metoprolol is well tolerated, and side effects are transient and very mild. Metroplol doesn’t exhibit habit formation. Transient effects of Metoprolol are dizziness, lightheadedness, vision problems (haziness of vision) drowsiness, tiredness, diarrhea, and trouble sleeping.
Metoprolol usage on children and pregnant mothers aren’t yet established, so its best to consult your physician about the safe usage of Metoprolol. Though exceedingly rare, Metoprolol intake can sometimes result serious side effects. If these symptoms occur, stop the Metoprolol intake and consult your doctor.
These side effects include severely slow heartbeat, continual dizziness, abnormal fatigue, and fainting. Bluish tinge on the hands and feet, numbness on these parts are signs of lack of oxygen/blood supply.
Patients suffering asthma, bronchitis, emphysema or other respiratory problems are discouraged taking Metoprolol. Likewise with patients having existing slow heartbeat rates such as bradycardia and those that suffer heart blocks, Metoprolol can cause heartbeat to go down to dangerously low levels. In effect, Metoprolol inhibits heart muscle contraction and can likely aggravate existing heart problems.
There have been several talks about Toprol grapefruit, or taking Toprol with grapefruit. While there is to be yet a study made regarding Toprol’s interaction with grapefruit, it was already theorized that grapefruit could inhibit the body’s absorption of medications. So it’s advisable to take Toprol with plain water.
