Cancer patients are often subjected to chemotherapy sessions. This therapy is but a long term process that needs close attention from the experts. It is a therapy designed to restore the destroyed bodily cells due to cancer, thus to allow patients to live a normal, worry-free life again. However, attached with this treatment process are a number of symptoms or side effects that patients need to endure. Two of the most bothering though are nausea and vomiting.
Nausea and vomiting are basically two of the most common conditions that people of all ages may experience. However, in the case of those who have undergone chemotherapy, these symptoms are so bothering that it persists almost every hour. So, to help patients feel better while on the treatment session, one solution that is said to be potent in eliminating nausea and vomiting was introduced to the public under the name Zofran.
So what is Zofran? Known by its generic name Ondansetron, the drug Zofran is a kind of antagonist that works to inhibit the actions of the hormone serotonin. It blocks this chemical “thought”, which is said to be the cause of vomiting and nausea by attacking the central and peripheral nerves where this thought dwell. Once attacked, the elements that Zofran contains will lessen set the vagus nerve to rest, which in turn is the one capable of triggering the system to cause vomiting. Along with this action, the chemical also works to block the serotonin receptors living in the so-called chemoreceptor trigger zone. This is what further makes it potent in preventing nausea, as well as vomiting.
However, to make such mechanism possible, Zofran must be administered to patients under the right dosage. Well, according to several Zofran prescribing information resources, the drug must be given one to three times a day. This varies, however, depending on the severity of the condition treated. For adults and children aging 13 above, 8 milligrams of this medication must be taken on a given period of time for the initial treatment. It must be followed by another dose of 8 milligrams after 8 hours.
Not only that. It is also typical for experts to recommend taking a tablet of Zofran once every 12 hours. This treatment must be continued only for two to three days, and following this oral intake, 1.5 to 2 hours will usually pass before the maximum level of plasma concentration is achieved. Once taken in the body, this medication will be metabolized by the liver and excreted by the kidneys.
Zofran, although deemed safe for patients, may cause a number of side effects that are worth considering. The most recognized of the Zofran side effects are headache, constipation, diarrhea, drowsiness, and lightheadedness. The patients may also experience blurry vision days after the medication. Other than that, symptoms of allergy may occur, including rashes, severe dizziness, itching, swelling, and difficulty of breathing. Well, if any of these symptoms appear to be severe, there’s nothing else better you can do than to consult an expert. Note that if left ignored or unattended, they only tend to cause further complications. So make sure is handled under control. Your doctor knows best.
While telling your doctor everything about the side effects of Zofran, also see to it that your medical history is reviewed. If, for instance, you are suffering from intestinal problems or stomach pains, allergies, and liver disease, report them to your specialist. These conditions may interact with the treatment, then worsening side effects. Alcohol intake must also be avoided, and if possible, one should not handle heavy activities like driving for the possibility of dizziness. Lastly, pregnant women are highly advised to see an expert prior to Zofran intake.
