Migraine is one condition that has been bothering thousands of people all over the world. Statistics show that three of five people are afflicted by it at some point in their lives, and it is unfortunate for them that until these days, no specific cure is identified that can totally eliminate migraine. Although that said, there’s still no need for its victims to feel bad for the fact that there are certain treatments capable of reducing the symptoms of this condition, leaving the person to feel better. Of the treatments available, one name stands out as the best – Zomig.
Zomig, often known as Zolmitriptan, is a prescription drug formulated to contain chemicals capable of inhibiting the action of serotonin receptors. It is considered by experts as a member of the second generation of triptan capable of treating migraine attacks and other forms of headaches.
But how exactly Zomig works to treat migraines? As maintained by several medical researches and studies, this prescription drug once taken into the system will start to constrict vessels in the blood, which in turn is caused by the blood dilation. So once the blood vessels are constricted, painful sensations are eliminated, then leaving the victim free from headaches. The most important fact to note about this medication so far is that although it is highly effective in reducing the headaches brought by migraine attacks, it does not work to totally eliminate the headaches especially if taken on its prophylactic form. But because of such capability, the Food and Drug Administration has approved this medication for the treatment of migraine just in 1997.
Just like the rest of medications available, Zomig is formulated to be taken under certain directions. The right dosage must be considered specifically for it is by following the right doses that everything will be made safe. So before using this medication, note that the doses may vary depending on the forms of Zomig used, as well as to the severity of the condition treated. If the medication is taken on its tablet form, doctors will recommend their patients to start taking the dose at its initial stage, around 2.5 milligrams or lower. This can be repeated after a matter of two hours especially if the symptoms of migraine persist. If you will look at the doses for the whole day, a maximum of ten milligrams is necessary. For those who prefer to take a dose lower than 2.5 milligrams are often advised to split the tablet into two. If the newest Zomig nasal spray form is what you are advised to use, then you are just left with the responsibility to follow the Zomig nasal spray directions printed on the product’s label.
Although that easy to take, medical experts have found certain side effects that may possibly occur with the use of the drug. The most common of the Zomig side effects are chest pain or tightness, sore throat, flushing, dizziness, weakness, tingling sensation, sweating, and abdominal discomfort. Certain allergic reactions like difficulty of breathing, hives and rashes may also develop, but rare. These allergic reactions may only persist to those who have history of allergies.
The good thing to note about the Zomig side effects is that they only develop temporarily. If proper medication is administered, they will gradually disappear. However, if the symptoms are left ignored or untreated, it may lead to serious and chronic conditions that can be labeled as the “Zomig dangers”. These complications will of course cost you an arm and a leg, so why allow them to develop if there’s still a chance for you to control them? You’ll be free from such bothering symptoms if you’re taking the medication according to what is directed by your doctor. This is where the importance of maintaining a regular checkup came to be.
