Know someone who happens to be psychotic? Your child is probably a victim of it. Well, whatever makes you interested in learning more about this condition, there’s one main fact that I must tell you – acute manic disorder and schizophrenia can now treated with one potent solution labeled as Zyprexa.
Zyprexa is known throughout the medical industry as the third most popular form of atypical antipsychotic which had gained approval in 1996 by the Food and Drug Administration. From that year, this medication has become one of the most valued and preferred antipsychotic treatment for several good reasons.
The Zyprexa works as an atypical antipsychotic drug in a not so known mechanism. Nevertheless, several reports have it that this medication when taken into the system will work to block the receptors of neurotransmitters in the brain. The neurotransmitters are naturally the ones capable of allowing the brain nerves to communicate with each other. If the levels of these brain chemicals are not balanced, brain disorders that will affect behavior will occur. So to avoid this from happening, the Zyprexa once it travels into the brain to balance the neurotransmitters level will start to bind with the alpha-1, histamine H1, type 2 serotonin, dopamine, and muscarinic receptors. The mechanism involved here will help alleviate the symptoms associated with schizophrenia and acute manic disorder.
Although that effective, it is worth noting that everything will only be made possible if the drug is taken under the right prescription dosage. This medication is usually offered to be taken orally, and it’s typical for doctors to advise their patients to start with a dose of about ten milligrams a day. The dose may be increased by five in a weekly interval, and so far a dose more than ten is not yet found to be more effective in reducing the risks associated with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The same is true with the safety of doses more than 20 milligrams.
There are several other doctors who recommend patients to start with ten milligrams of Zyprexa medication to be administered through the injection. This, however, is maintained if the condition treated is schizophrenia. An additional of ten doses will be suggested if needed, but a dose beyond thirty must be avoided for this has not been adequately evaluated for both safety and effectiveness.
Given those facts, it is then necessary for every patient to be guided while on the treatment if possible. The doctor must be noted for everything about the conditions that may interact with the medication. It will also make a lot of sense if regular check up is maintained to make sure that everything is under control. One reason for this is that the Zyprexa medication may cause a number of side effects that should not be ignored. In fact, it is highly advised that patients must see a doctor immediately in case any of the possible side effects persist. Well, the most common side effects of Zyprexa include insomnia, drowsiness, dizziness, orthostatic, constipation, dry mouth, weight gain, hypotension, and tremor. Certain movement imperfections may also develop days after the medication such as jerky, sudden and involuntary motions of the eyelids, jaw, mouth, or tongue. And, to complete the list, Zyprexa may cause the increase the blood sugar levels in the body, as well as the symptoms of diabetes. Because of this possibility, patients who are taking the medication are advised to undergo blood sugar tests to monitor its rise or growth. The same is true for those who are suffering from diabetes. Note that these side effects can further be elevated if the medication is not taken under the right dosage.
